We think them somewhat square,
Men who wear detachable collars, I mean
Clerks on high stools, with pince-nez,
And metalled elastics around white shirted sleeves.
Sometimes they are the try-to-be-with-its,
Young men in the city, Going somewhere
Italian suits with faint stripes,
And cream collars, barely different from the shirt.
John wears detachable collars. His are
white collars with a striped blue suit.
John is sharp, acerbic, and nasty.
John is not a nice man.
We could have the psychologists test them
by the colour of collar and shirt
So we know what to think of the man
Who wears collar different to his shirt
But I for one prefer a man
Who has a collar of that is coloured
just the same as his shirt. Or even one,
who doesn’t have a collar at all.
